Understanding the Sacral Chakra

Sep 30, 2022 09:31AM ● By Kara Dewey
A seven-month editorial series began with the Root Chakra in the September edition of Natural Awakenings. October explores the Sacral Chakra. What is it? What organs are affected? How can I support my energy body health?

Chakras are an integral part of physical, psychological and spiritual functions. Chakras are whirling energy centers correlated to acupuncture points. These energy centers control and energize major organs. When they malfunction, the vital organs become sick or dis-eased because they do not have enough life energy (or prana) to function properly.

The Sacral Chakra is the second of seven chakras. It is located in the pelvic area. It is called Svadhisthana in Sanskrit. Physical creation occurs here and is needed for spiritual development. This energy can be transmuted into love and spiritual oneness. It fuels the upper chakras.

The symbol is a moon crescent, which represents the relationship between the tides of water and the phases of the moon. The animal associated with the Sacral Chakra is a Badger. The badger represents the recognition of individual needs and self-care.

The physical functions focus on the creative and procreation. The psychological functions are emotions and searching for pleasure. When the Sacral Chakra malfunctions it may manifest as urinary problems, impotency, sterility, enlarged prostate gland, myoma fibroids. The glands associated are the Gonads. These reproductive organs are essential for sexual reproduction since they are responsible for the production of male and female gametes.

Orange is the color of the Sacral Chakra. Wearing and surrounding yourself in orange helps one achieve balance. For food, think orange! Carrots, mango, oranges, orange peppers, peaches, apricots, pumpkins, sweet potato, turmeric and ginger  are a great addition to a chakra-focused diet.

A recommended yoga pose is Happy Baby (Ananda Balasana). This can help open your hips, which are linked directly to your sacral area and releases deeply stored emotions and memories.

Activities for balance include creative things such as painting, dancing and singing.

Try infusing essential oils or burning incense or candles like Sandalwood, Citrus, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang.

The crystals are Carnelian, Snowflake Obsidian, Tigers Eye and Moonstone.

Mantra examples are:  “I am grateful for the joy of being me.”  “I am a creative being.” “I embrace my emotions.”

Sacral chakra health is the building block to a creative, spiritually and emotionally balanced life.
